The Not-So-Great-Gatsby: How Fitzgerald lay outs tone in his novel
The Great Gatsby
F. Scott Fitzgerald goes to great lengths to portray the tone of his novel in many different aspects. However, it is the last-place passage in The Great Gatsby where the tone of his novel really shows through. Whereas the overall aspect of the novel represents one mans attempt to fulfill his stargaze, an unattainable reverie, the final passage seems to ramp up Fitzgeralds feelings of hopelessness and despair. Fitzgeralds novel has a frequent tone of hopelessness and despair; it comes across in the minds, characters, and plan of The Great Gatsby.
The themes in this novel all lean towards negativeness; there are no hopeful or exalt lessons. One of the major themes of this novel is the unattainable American dream. The cause shows his tone of hopelessness when he writes about Jay Gatsbys dream to get the girl he has been striving for. The girl is restricting and he can see her, but no result how close he gets, they will never be together. He stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way...and distinguished nothing except a virtuoso green light.
(Fitzgerald 26) Gatsbys morality is destroyed in his signal for Daisy, something that he could never have. He is a man who threw his flavor away for something he could never get. At the end of the novel, mountain passs speech solidifies the authors feelings towards the American dream and Gatsbys life. ...his dream so close that he could scantily fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him. (171) The novel also has a strong theme regarding the hollowness of the speeding class. The authors bitterness towards the upper class is seen throughout the novel; they all leave others to lily-white up their mess. Even Daisy, after all Gatsby had done for her, lets him bow out the blame, and doesnt even come his funeral.
